Alphabet Mahjong swaps the traditional mahjong tiles for letters and keeps the constraint that makes the game work: you can only take a tile that is free on at least one side and not covered from above. The board is a layered stack, so most of the letters are buried when the round begins and the ones you can reach are only a fraction of the set. You find two identical exposed letters and remove them as a pair, which uncovers whatever they were resting on and may bury something you were saving for later. That is the whole puzzle: a pair available now might be the only way to free a letter you need, or it might block the path to it, and a board can become unsolvable if you take the wrong pairs early. The letter theme means matching is instant, with no symbol recognition to slow the scan. Boards take five to fifteen minutes.
